Broken Roads Indie Game Review

Broken Roads Review

Broken Roads is a beautiful game, but it will leave you with a broken heart.

In Broken Roads, players embark on a journey through a desolate future Australia, where the landscape is as harsh as the choices they face. The game prides itself on weaving a gripping narrative, through its Moral Compass System, where every decision shapes the path ahead.

One standout feature – and unfortunately there aren’t many – is this Moral Compass mentioned above. It’s unique system that tracks the philosophical leanings of your character. This means your choices aren’t just about being good or bad, but about shaping your character’s worldview. However, despite its innovative design, I found it hard to connect with the story or its characters, making the Moral Compass feel less impactful for me.

Broken Roads Review

Broken Roads has a beautiful art style and design and was very enjoyable to look at as it captured the beauty of the Australian landscape even in its desolation. It sucks because even though I was having a great time looking and enjoying the scenery I couldn’t get passed the slow pacing and the point and clicking I was doing. Despite being labeled as an RPG, Broken Roads often feels more like a point-and-click adventure game and because I was expecting a more RPG feel the clicking wasn’t doing it for me.

The audio for the characters is wild. NPCs and even the main characters will have voiceovers for one sentence but not the next. The narrators voice was also not great. It felt like one of the developers was reading off the script with no voice acting experience. Very unprofessional to be honest. This inconsistency, coupled with amateurish narration, detracted from my overall experience.

Let’s quickly talk about the combat in the game. Combat in Broken Roads is often repetitive, with most fights involving small groups of enemies. There arent many fights, so if that is what you’re in the market for you wont find it here. And unlike other RPGs (though this might not even be one), there are no dungeons to explore, which may disappoint must players. It for sure did for me.

RESULTS
Overall, Broken Roads has some promising ideas and a unique storytelling approach with the Moral Compass. The art style is captivating, but the gameplay, audio, and some other elements could use some heavy polish. Given that even the developers acknowledged issues at launch, it’s hard for me to wholeheartedly recommend this game. If you’re intrigued by its setting and storytelling mechanics, it might be worth checking out, but be prepared for some rough edges along the way.
